The Play People - York Gardens Nursery

Nurseries where children learn through their play..

The Early Years Foundation Stage

Children develop quickly in their early years and at our nurseries we aim to do all that we can to give children the best possible start in life.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the statutory framework that sets the standards that all Early Years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children are ready for school and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.

A recent review of the EYFS made clear, the prime areas of learning are essential for children’s healthy development. The Government also believes that a good foundation in mathematics and literacy is crucial for later success, particularly in terms of children’s readiness for school.

Characteristics of effective learning from the EYFS framework are the guiding principles of our nursery which will allow all children to reach their full potential. Children will learn and develop through:

1. Playing and exploring

- finding out and exploring
- using what they know in their play
- being willing to have a go

2. Active learning

- being involved and concentrating
- keep on trying
- enjoy achieving what they set out to do

3. Creating and thinking critically

- having their own ideas
- using what they already know to learn new things
- choosing ways to do things and finding new ways
Themes of The Early Years Foundation Stage

Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people and the world around them. However, development is not an automatic process . It depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.

A Unique Child

At our nurseries we value and respect the fact that all children are individual and as early years educators we will support children’s development by encouraging their individuality and celebrating their cultural identities and needs.

Positive Relationships

At our nurseries we understand the importance of a safe loving environment that enables each child to feel a sense of belonging. Each child will be assigned a key person who will play a crucial role in fostering the right environment, coupled with working alongside their parent or carer.

Enabling Environments

We provide an enabling environment reflect the different types of play and learning styles of children. It is a stimulating environment both indoor and outdoor that is child-led with the right balance of adult-led activities. An extensive range of resources and support from their key person will also enable each child to feel confident to explore and learn.
